A rooftop solar system has almost no moving parts, so people assume it needs no looking after. That is half true. The electronics mostly take care of themselves for years. What does need attention is the one thing that changes every single day in Madhya Pradesh — the layer of dust settling on your glass. Dust is the difference between a system that pays back in four years and one that quietly underperforms while you wonder why the bill isn't dropping the way you were promised. Here's how I tell every homeowner to look after their panels, in plain terms, with the numbers that matter.

How often to clean in MP's dust

There is no single right answer, because dust in Bhopal is not the same as dust next to a cement plant in Satna or a field during the wheat harvest. As a working rule for most homes in central MP, clean every two to three weeks through the dry months from October to June, and about once a month during the monsoon when rain rinses the panels for you. If your roof faces a busy road, a construction site, a flour mill, or farmland at harvest time, tighten that to weekly. The honest version: stop cleaning by the calendar and start cleaning by what your monitoring app tells you. When today's clear-sky output sits noticeably below what the same panels gave you a fortnight ago on a similar day, that gap is dirt, and it's time.

Water or dry cleaning — which is right?

Water wins in almost every case, and it doesn't need to be anything special. Plain tap water, a soft brush or microfibre pad on an extendable pole, and ten minutes early in the morning or after sunset when the glass is cool. That's the whole job. Dry cleaning with a soft brush is a fallback for when water is genuinely scarce or a panel is only lightly dusted, but done on abrasive grit it risks fine scratches on the anti-reflective coating, and those scratches are permanent. The one thing I warn people about with water is timing and temperature. Never throw cold water on panels baking at midday — the thermal shock stresses the glass. And skip detergents and soaps entirely; they leave a film that attracts more dust and can void aspects of the panel warranty.

The two-minute rule of thumb: cool glass, soft touch, clean water, no chemicals. If you can write your name in the dust, you've already lost generation. If the glass looks clean but the app shows a dip after rain dried muddy, that spotting is worth a wipe too — dried monsoon splatter is stickier than plain dust.

What a professional service visit covers

Cleaning is the visible part; a proper annual service is the part that protects the expensive bits. When we do a maintenance visit, cleaning the glass is maybe a quarter of it. The rest is inspection: checking that panel clamps and the mounting structure are still tight after a year of wind and thermal expansion, looking for discoloured or loose DC connectors that are the usual cause of hot spots, confirming earthing and the lightning arrestor are intact, opening the inverter's log to see if it has been throwing intermittent faults you never noticed, and checking that cable insulation hasn't cracked or been chewed. On a good visit we also compare each string's output so a single underperforming panel shows up before it drags a whole row down. None of this shows on a casual glance from the ground, which is exactly why it gets missed.

Inverter errors: what the codes are telling you

The inverter is the brain, and when something is wrong it usually flashes a code or a colour before anything dramatic happens. You don't need to be an electrician to understand the common families of faults.

A grid-related fault that appears and clears itself is normal and nothing to panic about — the inverter is doing its job by disconnecting when the grid is out of spec. A fault that stays, repeats daily, or comes with heat or smell is the one that needs a phone call, not a wait-and-see.

Reading your monitoring app without overthinking it

Every modern system comes with an app, and most owners open it twice then forget it. That's a waste, because the app is your early-warning system. You only need to watch three things. First, daily units generated against a clear-sky day from a week or two ago — a steady drop with clean glass means something mechanical, a drop that cleaning fixes means it was just dust. Second, whether all panels or strings are producing evenly; one lagging string points to shading or a failing panel. Third, any error flags in the event log. You don't need to study it daily. A two-minute look once a week catches nearly every problem while it's still small and cheap to fix. The single most useful habit is remembering roughly what a good sunny day produces for your system, so a bad number jumps out at you.

When to DIY and when to call

Draw the line at electricity. Cleaning the glass and reading the app are yours to do, safely, from a stable position — and if your roof is high or steep, even the cleaning is worth handing to someone with proper access gear rather than risking a fall for a few units. Everything on the electrical side belongs to a professional: a persistent inverter fault, tripping, any burning smell, water getting into an enclosure, loose or discoloured connectors, or generation that stays low even after a thorough clean. The rule I give everyone is simple — never open the inverter and never touch the DC wiring yourself. Solar DC stays live whenever the sun is up, even with the grid switched off, and it does not forgive mistakes.

Does an AMC actually pay for itself?

An annual maintenance contract is worth it when the maths says so, not by default. For a normal single-storey Bhopal home where you can safely reach the panels and you'll actually do the fortnightly clean, self-cleaning plus one professional check a year is usually enough. An AMC starts earning its keep when access is difficult, when you travel and nobody's home to clean, or on larger and commercial arrays where every percent of lost generation is real money each month. Put a number on it: work out the rupee value of the generation you'd lose from neglected cleaning and undetected faults over a year, and compare it to the contract price. On a small home the loss is modest; on a 50 kW commercial roof, a couple of weeks of soiled panels can cost more than the whole AMC.

A worked example: what soiling really costs

Take a typical 3 kW home system in Bhopal. On a good day it produces around 360 to 400 units a month, and MP residential tariffs climb past ₹7.50 a unit at the higher slabs solar cancels first. Now let dust build for three weeks in the dry season with no rain, and say it's costing you a sustained 15 percent — a completely realistic figure for neglected panels near dusty roads. That's roughly 55 to 60 units a month you generated the capacity for and simply didn't collect, worth about ₹400 to ₹450 every month, or well over ₹5,000 a year. The cleaning that would have prevented it costs you ten minutes and a bucket of water. That gap — money lost versus effort saved — is the entire argument for keeping your glass clean, and it's why I spend more time talking to customers about cleaning than about anything else.
