PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana is India's national rooftop solar subsidy scheme, and it's the single biggest reason solar has become affordable for homeowners in Bhopal and across Madhya Pradesh. But the scheme's rules are easy to get wrong — and installers sometimes quote numbers that don't match what the government actually pays. Here's the plain version.
How much is the subsidy, exactly?
The subsidy is tiered by system size, not a flat percentage of cost. For a residential rooftop system in Madhya Pradesh:
| System size | Subsidy amount |
|---|---|
| 1 kW | ₹30,000 |
| 2 kW | ₹60,000 |
| 3 kW or larger | ₹78,000 (flat maximum) |
₹78,000 is the ceiling. A 5kW or 10kW system does not get a larger subsidy than a 3kW system — the ₹78,000 cap applies to any system 3kW and above. If an installer quotes you a subsidy figure above ₹78,000 for a residential system, treat that as a red flag.
Who qualifies?
- Any Indian citizen with a residential electricity connection in Madhya Pradesh
- One application per household
- You'll need: Aadhaar card, a recent electricity bill, and proof of roof ownership/authorization
Commercial and industrial properties are not eligible for PM Surya Ghar — it's a residential-only scheme. Commercial solar in MP instead benefits from accelerated depreciation and net metering, which is a different economic case entirely.
How long does it actually take?
This is where most confusion — and most installer over-promising — happens. A realistic timeline looks like:
- Registration & DISCOM approval: 1-2 weeks
- Physical installation: 3-5 days once approved
- Net metering setup with the DISCOM: an additional 30-45 days after installation
End to end, budget for 4-8 weeks from application to a fully net-metered, subsidy-approved system. Be skeptical of anyone promising subsidy money in your bank account within days — the disbursal process runs through the DISCOM and the national portal, not the installer.
What does this mean for your actual cost?
For a typical 3kW residential system costing ₹1,35,000-₹1,50,000 gross, the ₹78,000 subsidy brings your net cost down to roughly ₹57,000-₹72,000 — before you even count the ₹3,500-₹4,500/month most 3kW systems save on electricity bills. That combination is usually what gets a 3-4 year payback period after subsidy.
The tariff math, in plain numbers: A 3kW rooftop in Bhopal generates roughly 360-400 units a month. Solar wipes out your most expensive units first — and MP residential tariffs climb past ₹7.50 per unit at higher usage slabs, before fixed charges. That's why those 360-400 units are worth ₹3,500-₹4,500 to a typical household every month, not the ₹2 or ₹3 a unit you might assume. The higher your current bill, the faster solar pays for itself.

Frequently Asked Questions
How much is the PM Surya Ghar subsidy?
₹30,000 for a 1kW system, ₹60,000 for a 2kW system, and a flat ₹78,000 for any system 3kW or larger. ₹78,000 is the maximum subsidy available — a bigger system does not get a bigger subsidy beyond 3kW.
Who is eligible for PM Surya Ghar in Bhopal?
Any Indian citizen with a residential electricity connection in Madhya Pradesh. One application per household. You need Aadhaar and a recent electricity bill to apply.
How long does the application take?
Realistically 4-8 weeks end to end: registration and DISCOM approval typically take 1-2 weeks, installation itself takes 3-5 days once approved, and net metering setup with the DISCOM after installation takes another 30-45 days.
Does the subsidy apply to commercial installations?
No. PM Surya Ghar is a residential-rooftop-only scheme. Commercial and industrial solar in Madhya Pradesh does not receive this capital subsidy, though it benefits from accelerated depreciation and net metering instead.
