Net metering is what actually turns your solar system into bill savings — it's the mechanism that credits you for excess power your panels send back to the grid. Here's the process, step by step, for a residential system in Madhya Pradesh, including which DISCOM you'll deal with, the documents to keep ready, and the delays that catch most homeowners out.
Which DISCOM handles your net metering
Madhya Pradesh has three electricity distribution companies, and your net metering application goes to whichever one bills you today. If you're in Bhopal or anywhere in central MP, that's MPMKVVCL (Madhya Pradesh Madhya Kshetra Vidyut Vitaran Co. Ltd), which runs its net metering process through the MPCZ portal. Western districts including Indore and Ujjain fall under MPPKVVCL, and the eastern zone around Jabalpur and Rewa is served by MPPoKVVCL. The five-step process below is broadly the same across all three, but the inspection scheduling speed and portal quirks differ, so an installer who files regularly with your specific zone saves you real time.
The 5-step process
- Installation is completed. Your solar system is fully installed and commissioned by your installer — this is the 3-5 day physical install most residential systems take.
- Net metering application is submitted. Your installer files the net metering application with your local DISCOM, along with the installation documents and system specifications.
- DISCOM site inspection. The DISCOM schedules a site visit to verify the installed system matches what was applied for. This step is a common source of delay if scheduling is slow.
- Bidirectional meter installation. The DISCOM installs a bidirectional meter that separately tracks power you draw from the grid and power your system exports back to it.
- Net metering agreement goes live. Once the meter is installed and verified, billing switches to a net-consumption model — you're billed only for the difference between what you drew and what you exported.
Documents to keep ready
The application stalls most often because a document is missing, so assemble these before your installer files. You'll need a recent electricity bill (to confirm the connection number and sanctioned load), your Aadhaar or other identity proof, proof of ownership or authorisation for the roof, a passport-size photo, and the technical set your installer prepares — the system specification sheet, inverter and panel datasheets, and the commissioning report. Where the sanctioned load and proposed solar capacity differ, MPMKVVCL may ask for a load-enhancement note, so flag your intended system size to your installer early. Keeping scanned copies on your phone means you can clear a portal query the same day instead of losing a week to back-and-forth.
How long does this actually take?
Budget 30-45 days after installation for the full net metering setup to complete. This is separate from — and comes after — the 3-5 day physical installation and the 1-2 week subsidy/permit approval that happens before installation starts. Combined, the full journey from application to a fully net-metered system typically runs 4-8 weeks. The single biggest variable is how quickly the DISCOM schedules its site inspection; the paperwork, once complete, moves faster than the field visit that follows it.
How billing actually works once it's live
At the end of each billing cycle, you're charged only for your net consumption — the power you drew from the grid minus the power you exported. If your system generates more than you use in a given cycle, the surplus carries forward as a credit rather than being paid out in cash. A 3 kW system in Bhopal generates roughly 360-400 units a month against MP's residential tariff of about ₹7.50 per unit at higher slabs, so a household drawing similar volumes sees bills fall close to zero across a year, helped by Bhopal's roughly 5.2 peak sun hours a day.
What the bidirectional meter shows, and why it matters
A normal meter only counts one thing: units you pull from the grid. A bidirectional meter counts two — import and export — separately, and your bill is built from the difference. So on a sunny afternoon when your panels make more than the house is using, the surplus flows out and the meter clocks it as export; at night, when the panels are idle, you import as usual. What you pay is import minus export for the cycle. This is why the meter swap is the moment net metering actually starts, not the day your panels went up. If the DISCOM leaves your old single-direction meter in place, every unit you export gets read as if you consumed it — your bill goes up instead of down. Confirm in writing that the new meter is bidirectional before you sign off on commissioning.
Carry-forward credits and annual settlement
In months when your system out-generates your usage — think a lightly occupied home in October — the extra units don't vanish and they aren't paid to you in cash. They carry forward as banked credit and offset the months when you draw more than you make, like the peak-AC stretch from April to June. The account is trued up at the end of the settlement year, so the right way to size a system is against your annual consumption, not your lowest or highest single month. Oversize it and you're banking credits you never use; undersize it and you're still buying grid power at the top slab. A 3 kW system suits a household using roughly 350-400 units a month across the year; if your summer bills are far higher than winter, tell your installer so the sizing reflects the swing.
Common mistakes and delays to watch for
The most common bottleneck is DISCOM inspection scheduling, not the paperwork itself. Beyond that, three avoidable mistakes cost homeowners weeks: applying with a mismatch between the sanctioned load on your bill and the system size installed, which triggers a load-enhancement query; leaving the connection in a previous owner's or a tenant's name, so the applicant and the billed party don't match; and assuming the subsidy and net metering are one step — they are separate approvals, and your export credits only begin once the bidirectional meter is physically installed and the agreement is signed. Verify the meter is bidirectional before you accept commissioning; a single-direction meter will record your export as if it were consumption and quietly inflate your bill. One more habit worth keeping: photograph the meter reading the day it goes live and check your first two bills line by line. If the export column stays blank while the sun's been out, something in the wiring or the meter configuration is wrong, and it's far easier to get the DISCOM back while the job is fresh than months later.
