A shop, clinic or showroom is close to the perfect solar customer, and most owners do not realise it. You are open and drawing power exactly when the sun is up, you pay a commercial tariff that is higher than a household's, and you rarely need a system big enough to be complicated. The catch — and I will be straight about it — is that the residential subsidy does not apply to your commercial connection. This guide covers what actually fits a small-business roof in Bhopal, why the daytime match matters so much, the hybrid angle if you also have a home connection, and the real rupee picture for a typical ₹8,000-a-month bill.
Why a shop is a better fit than a home
Solar generates during the day, and that is precisely when a shop is running its lights, fans, air conditioning, refrigeration and equipment. A home often has its heaviest load in the evening after the sun has set, which means a house exports surplus midday power and buys it back at night. A shop consumes what it makes, as it makes it. That self-consumption is where the value is, because every unit you use directly offsets your full commercial tariff of ₹8-9 rather than being exported for a lower net-metering credit. So a business gets more out of the same kilowatt of panels than a household does — the roof works hardest at the exact hours you are open.
What size fits: 3 to 10 kW
Most small businesses land between 3 kW and 10 kW, and the right number is set by your bill and your roof, not by ambition. A small retail shop or a single-doctor clinic often sits at 3-5 kW. A showroom, a busy clinic with imaging equipment, or a shop with heavy air conditioning runs 5-10 kW. Here is a rough guide to matching size to a monthly commercial bill in Bhopal, using ₹8-9 a unit and roughly 5.2 peak sun hours a day.

Roughly 100 square feet of shadow-free roof per kW is a safe planning figure. A shop with a small terrace can usually fit 5 kW comfortably; if roof space is tight, we look at the proprietor's residence roof or a shed structure. The point is to size to your daytime load, not to blanket the roof — an oversized system just exports cheaply.
The numbers on an ₹8,000-a-month shop
Take a shop paying about ₹8,000 a month, which at ₹8.50 a unit is roughly 940 units. A 5 kW system in Bhopal makes about 5 × 5.2 × 300 = 7,800 units a year, or around 650 a month — and if your daytime use runs a little higher, a 6 kW plant closes the gap. If you consume the bulk of that during business hours, you offset a large share of the bill. Value 7,800 units a year at ₹8.50 and that is about ₹66,000 a year off your electricity cost. Against a turnkey estimate of ₹40,000 per kW, a 5 kW system is roughly ₹2,00,000, so simple payback is in the region of three years — before any tax benefit a registered business can claim. After that the power is effectively free for two more decades of a 25-year panel life.
The honest bit on subsidy: PM Surya Ghar is a residential scheme. Your shop's commercial connection does not get the ₹78,000 capital subsidy a home does. Do not let anyone quote you a shop system with a residential subsidy knocked off — that is either a mistake or a red flag. What a business gets instead is a higher tariff to save against, strong daytime self-consumption, and, if you are a registered firm, accelerated depreciation and GST input credit that often beat the residential subsidy in absolute rupees.
The proprietor-residence hybrid angle
Here is the move many small-business owners miss. If your property has a separate domestic electricity connection — the classic shop-below, home-above arrangement, or a residence next door on your own meter — that residential connection does qualify for PM Surya Ghar. So you can run a hybrid: a subsidised system on the home meter capturing up to ₹78,000 of subsidy, and a separate unsubsidised but high-value system on the shop meter that pays back fast on the commercial tariff. Two connections, two economic cases, one roof plan. Single-phase or three-phase?
This follows your existing supply, not a choice you make freshly. A smaller shop on a single-phase connection typically takes a single-phase inverter and systems up to about 3 kW. Once your load includes serious air conditioning, motors or a larger connected demand, you are on a three-phase supply, and the system uses a three-phase inverter — usually from 5 kW upward. Matching the inverter phase to your sanctioned connection matters because net metering approval from the DISCOM depends on it, and a mismatch is a classic reason an application stalls. If your load has grown and you are considering upgrading the connection anyway, that is worth deciding before we size the plant.
What fits on a shop roof, practically
Small-business roofs are rarely a clean rectangle, and that is fine. We work around water tanks, staircases, parapets and the shadows they throw — a panel in shade for part of the day drags down the string it sits on, so layout matters more than raw area. Metal-sheet roofs on godowns and showrooms are excellent solar real estate; RCC terraces need a light mounting structure that also keeps the panels above the slab for airflow and waterproofing. If your own roof genuinely will not take the size you need, options include the adjacent residence roof, a small elevated structure over parking, or trimming the system to what fits and net-metering the balance. The right answer comes out of a proper site survey, not a phone estimate.
